Bolton lost more ground in League One's automatic promotion battle as they were held to a 0-0 draw at slumping Stevenage.

Will Forrester came the closest to scoring a winner for the visitors when he clattered the crossbar.

Wanderers have won just two of their last eight matches and have slipped six points off second-placed Derby, albeit with a game in hand.

As for Stevenage, they are now winless in their last six and sit a point outside the play-off places.

Despite neither team managing to find a way past either goalkeeper, it was not for the lack of trying.

Stevenage's Ben Thompson controlled Kane Smith's fifth-minute cross but flashed his strike past the post.

Boro were then saved by goalkeeper Taye Ashby-Hammond, who recovered quickly to collect Cameron Jerome's shot off the line.

Bolton started to slowly build confidence and Forrester directed Nathanael Ogbeta's corner on to the crossbar.

Thompson missed Boro's best chance to snatch victory with six minutes remaining as he scuffed his finish after Jordan Roberts intercepted Ricardo Santos' pass and laid it off to the midfielder.

Battling performance from both sides on a tricky pitch and in a gusting wind. Draw probably a fair result overall.

One of the most lenient refereeing performances I've seen for a long, long time, lets absolutely everything go for 70 minutes including multiple fouls by MacDonald on both Sheehan and Maghoma, who themselves then get booked for goodness only knows what. Bizarre.

Bolton have not beaten any of the top clubs that's why they won't get automatic promotion,and looks like play offs they have a scary semi final against Lincoln.

Good result for everyone else near the top. Lincoln very happy with it as are Derby and Pompey. Much to play for still.

Need a couple of decent wins to put some pressure on Derby, but any more slip ups and that will be the play offs again.

Ref bottled it several times during the match. Happy to give the easy decisions in the middle of the park, but not got the guts to make the right call in and around the area for both teams.

We all know why our top striker isn't playing. IE reaction in press conference said it all something behind the scenes...playing like a bent horse with the brakes on. Rest up now not going to catch Derby save it for the 'Magic Day' at Wembley.
