Peterborough United v Fleetwood Town – The pre-season lowdown

Peterborough United begin their renewed bid for a return to the Sky Bet Championship this afternoon when they face Fleetwood Town at the Weston Homes Stadium.

The Posh suffered late heartache last season as they narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs with manager Darren Ferguson’s former club Doncaster Rovers beating them to sixth place.

This afternoon, The Posh begin their 2019/2020 campaign against a Fleetwood Town side who will be looking to build on last season’s 11th-place finish.

Ahead of the match, we take a look at how the two sides have fared during their preparations for the new Sky Bet League One campaign.

Peterborough United

The Peterborough United squad have been put through their paces by manager Ferguson. A vigorous pre-season schedule has seen The Posh play no less than nine warm-up matches.

Ferguson’s side have beaten St Mirren, Stamford AFC, Kettering Town, Barnet, Bedford Town and Grimsby Town  while a Peterborough United XI hammered non-league side Deeping Rangers 8-1 on Monday. A 1-1 draw at Stevenage and a 4-2 loss at Reading were the only results which prevented The Posh from maintaining a 100% record in pre-season.

Goals are a major factor for any side wanting to challenge for promotion and both Ivan Toney and Mo Eisa have been on fire in pre-season. Former Newcastle United man Toney has netted six goals while fellow forward Eisa has bagged four. It should be noted that youngster Serhat Tasdemir, a summer signing from National League club AFC Fylde, has also chalked up four goals in an impressive pre-season programme for Peterborough United.

Fleetwood Town

Fleetwood Town opted to challenge themselves against strong opposition from both the English Premier League and English Football League during pre-season with the club facing just one non-league opponent in the form of Wrexham.

The Cod Army have won three and lost three of their pre-season fixtures with a 1-0 victory over neighbours Preston North End at Highbury being the highlight.

Joey Barton’s side have managed to score just five goals in their six matches, albeit against a sequence of stronger teams that those faced by this afternoon’s opponents Peterborough United. The goals of striker Paddy Madden could be key for the Lancashire side this season and he has scored twice in pre-season, both goals coming in a 3-1 win over Carlisle United.

Fleetwood Town have managed just one victory at Peterborough United since their English Football League journey began in 2012. Notching another win at the Weston Homes Stadium this afternoon would help breathe further confidence into what is a talented squad.
